6/22/2023 0 Comments Illuminated manuscriptsText in Latin: Prayer for Henry VI, Calendar, Psalms, Litany, Hours of the Virgin, Office of the Dead, Hours of the Cross, Prayers. Abbey Foundation of Oregon Annual Reportsīook of Hours MS0027 Horae Beatae Mariae Virginisġ19 leaves (14.7 x 10.5 cm).It makes me wonder how many other artists we might find in medieval cemeteries - if we only look. "This woman's story could have remained hidden forever without the use of these techniques. "Here we have direct evidence of a woman, not just painting, but painting with a very rare and expensive pigment, and at a very out-of-the way place," explains Christina Warinner of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, senior author on the paper. The growing economy of 11th century Europe fired demand for the precious and exquisite pigment that traveled thousands of miles via merchant caravan and ships to serve this woman artist's creative ambition," explains historian and co-author Michael McCormick of Harvard University. "She was plugged into a vast global commercial network stretching from the mines of Afghanistan to her community in medieval Germany through the trading metropolises of Islamic Egypt and Byzantine Constantinople. But by using these techniques, the researchers were able to uncover a truly remarkable life history. The woman's remains were originally a relatively unremarkable find from a relatively unremarkable place, or so it seemed. The findings of this study not only challenge long-held beliefs in the field, they also uncover an individual life history. The low visibility of women's labor in manuscript production has led many modern scholars to assume that women played little part in it. As a sign of humility, many medieval scribes and painters did not sign their work, a practice that especially applied to women. While Germany is known to have been an active center of book production during this period, identifying the contributions of women has been particularly difficult. The unexpected discovery of such a valuable pigment so early and in the mouth of an 11th century woman in rural Germany is unprecedented. "Only scribes and painters of exceptional skill would have been entrusted with its use," says Alison Beach of Ohio State University, a historian on the project. The use of ultramarine pigment made from lapis lazuli was reserved, along with gold and silver, for the most luxurious manuscripts. "Based on the distribution of the pigment in her mouth, we concluded that the most likely scenario was that she was herself painting with the pigment and licking the end of the brush while painting," states co-first author Monica Tromp of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History. "We examined many scenarios for how this mineral could have become embedded in the calculus on this woman's teeth," explains Radini. Careful analysis using a number of different spectrographic methods - including energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and micro-Raman spectroscopy - revealed the blue pigment to be made from lapis lazuli. "It came as a complete surprise - as the calculus dissolved, it released hundreds of tiny blue particles," recalls co-first author Anita Radini of the University of York. The only remarkable aspect to her remains was the blue particles found in her teeth. ![]() She had no particular skeletal pathologies, nor evidence of trauma or infection. She was 45-60 years old when she died around 1000-1200 AD. One woman in the cemetery was found to have numerous flecks of blue pigment embedded within her dental calculus. The monastery is believed to have housed approximately 14 religious women from its founding until its destruction by fire following a series of 14th century battles. The earliest known written records from the monastery date to 1244 AD. Few records remain of the monastery and its exact founding date is not known, although a women's community may have formed there as early as the 10th century AD. Their analysis suggests that the woman was likely a painter of richly illuminated religious texts.Īs part of a study analyzing dental calculus - tooth tartar or dental plaque that fossilizes on the teeth during life - researchers examined the remains of individuals who were buried in a medieval cemetery associated with a women's monastery at the site of Dalheim in Germany. In a study published in Science Advances, an international team of researchers led by the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History and the University of York shed light on the role of women in the creation of such manuscripts with a surprising discovery - the identification of lapis lazuli pigment embedded in the calcified dental plaque of a middle-aged woman buried at a small women's monastery in Germany around 1100 AD. 6/22/2023 0 Comments Smart converter pro free download![]() This program offers a comprehensive solution for audio conversion and is highly recommended for users looking to convert large numbers of audio files with ease. The UE Wonderboom 3 is a tiny yet powerful portable, delivering the biggest sound in its size range that we tested. Price: $50 to $200 Tribit StormBox Micro 2 ($60) To avoid the issue altogether, though, consider getting one with a wired auxiliary input. Also make sure the speaker is close to the source device as distance can be a factor. ![]() If you plan to frequently use a speaker for video playback, look for devices with the most recent Bluetooth versions (4.x or 5.x) and lower latency codecs like aptX. Aside from occasional blips, all of our picks worked well in this regard. Only a handful of the few dozen speakers I tried had persistent, noticeable lip-sync issues. Luckily, it seems that most speakers these days don’t often have these problems. ![]() ![]() It’s annoying to find that your speaker’s latency isn’t low enough to avoid lip sync issues. This is a minor mention for those out there who use a speaker for their computer output, or as a mini soundbar solution for setups like a monitor and streaming box. In general, take range specs around 100 feet or more as a perfect-world scenario. It’s hard to gauge what aspects of any environment may interfere with a Bluetooth signal. If you’re hosting a patio party and duck inside, it’s wise to have the source device remain close by just in case. I ran into this issue across several devices regardless of their listed Bluetooth connectivity range. I’ve seen signal drop issues when crouching down, with my phone in the front pocket of my jeans, and barely 30 feet away from a speaker inside my apartment. That’s likely underselling the speaker's potential, but unpredictable environments can affect range and there’s little point in promising the moon only to get complaints. Other companies stick with a 30-foot range on the spec sheet and leave it at that, even though they may be running Bluetooth 4.x or 5.x. Some companies list their product’s longest possible range, usually outdoors and in an unobstructed line-of-sight test environment. If you're out and about, you'll want to remember to turn these speakers off manually when not in use to maximize battery life. Unlike normal Bluetooth speakers that go to sleep after a short period without use, these will usually stay awake (to listen for your commands) and slowly run down the battery. Luckily, some manufacturers also list the expected battery life when used at full volume and that transparency is appreciated.Īdditionally, if your Bluetooth speaker also happens to have WiFi connectivity, they're usually designed for always-on functionality. If you like your tunes loud, it can often end up cutting the expected usage time in half or more. This usually means they tested at a low to mid volume. That said, be careful when looking at battery specs, as they frequently list a maximum runtime (“up to” x amount of hours). These days, around 12 hours of runtime seems to be the baseline but obviously, the more battery life you can get out of a speaker, the better. The focus of this guide is on portable Bluetooth speakers, and while “portable” can be a relative term, these devices are generally for people who are likely to find themselves far from a power outlet. It may be worth splurging on a better sounding model with a lower IP rating if you’ll mostly be using it indoors, for instance. If you plan on using the ports, that may limit the product's rated ability to fend off the elements.Ĭonsider the IP rating and also how you plan to use your Bluetooth speaker when making your decision. They’re also good options for the beach, playground and other rough environs.Īdditionally, speakers with ports and a high rating will often include a tight-fitting cover over the charging or auxiliary ports. ![]() These are safe for quick dunks in the pool or tub and should be more than OK in the rain or in the shower. IP67 is a common rating these days indicating highly resistant and potentially rugged speakers. If it’s waterproof, it may have some innate resistance to solids, but there’s no guarantee. When an X is used instead of a number, that means the product wasn’t tested for resistance. The waterproof rating goes from 0 (no protection) to 9 (protected against immersion and high pressure jets). The former goes from 0 (no protection) to 6 (dust tight). It’s usually a combo of two numbers with the first indicating solid object ingress and the second being water. IP ratings (Ingress Protection) are the alphanumeric indicators you often see in a product’s spec sheet that define the tested resistance of a product to both solid objects (dirt, dust, fingers?) and water. The 2012 Fire HD 7 could not complete the test. While not as fast as the HDX, navigation performance is much improved over last year, with menus loading almost instantly and that feeling of sluggishness having been mostly wiped away.ġ.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 ProģDMark is now available for Kindle Fire tablets and, judging from the scores, we can be fairly certain that the 2013 Fire HD has even faster gaming performance than the 2012 Fire HD 8.9. The 2013 Fire HD is a different beast altogether. My biggest issue with the 2012 Kindle Fire HD 7's performance was that it seemed to chug under the weight of its own OS there was a palpable delay to pretty much everything. ![]() It still has a slightly yellowish tint like the HDX's, though. The screen resolution is 1,280x800 pixels and isn't nearly as sharp as the Fire HDX's screen, but is still pretty sharp and bright in its own right. Clouding on the Fire HD 2013 is much less severe and can only be seen in the corners when the screen displays a dark image - like during startup. The Kindle Fire HD (2012) had a bright vibrant screen, but backlight bleeding or "clouding" was apparent when looking at a black or dark image. There's just something comforting about having all your content automatically organized for you. When I tap Audiobooks, I know I'm seeing all the audiobooks I own and by tapping Store I can easily add more. Instead of pages and pages of app icons as in other OSes, on the Fire each type of content is siloed into its respective section. What I've always liked about the Kindle Fire interface is how the content is organized. Samsung's shortcut array behaves in much the same way as Amazon's, but also scrolls to the left to include more options and can even be customized to add more choices. Samsung does this with great success in its latest version of the TouchWiz UI, last seen on the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition. While the vast majority of the changes work, there's also a missed opportunity here to add more customization. Managing your storage is now a lot easier, as items can be located by type and each deleted on the fly. The Calendar includes a number of sensible improvements that for the most part make the interface a more efficient and gratifying experience. E-mail has been redesigned to require fewer steps to set up and is now compatible with threaded conversations, so instead of seeing a single e-mail from each person in the conversation, you now see a message from the last person to contribute to the thread. It simply works with few issues, which, compared with previous Fire tablets, I guess maybe is pretty special.Īmazon also cast a critical eye toward other native apps like e-mail and calendar as well as adding a new contacts app. ![]() I'm probably a bit overly excited about just how trouble-free the Web experience was, but there's really nothing special about it. ![]() Depending on which software solution you choose, you can expect it to recover as much as several hundred different file formats.ĭisk Drill is easy-to-use data recovery software.
